A little bit of geography and history to start with: Ajaccio is in the Corse du Sud department of the Corsica region - that means the southern end. it is the Capital of Corsica and located on the south western side of the island.

Ajaccio was the birth town of Napoléon Bonaparte, the future leader of great French Empire (as was). He was born on the 15th of August in 1769 and died on the island of Saint Helena in 1821.

Those arriving by boat to the island will see why Corsica has been called a 'mountain in the sea', as it boasts 50 peaks stretching over 2,000 metres.

Cruise travellers can look forward to sailing into a beautiful bay with mountains at the foot of the town.

Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport (AJA), formerly Campo dell'Oro Airport, is the main airport serving Ajaccio on Corsica. It is located in Ajaccio, 5 km east of the harbour.

Ajaccio is thriving these days and is the only pick up and drop off point for campervan and motorhome hire and rental vehicles on
the island
